Conegliano crushes Novara as Chieri and Perugia celebrate wins
Conegliano defeats Novara 3–0 in the fifth round of Italy’s A1 Women’s League. Chieri and Perugia also win as Milano signs Akimova.
Conegliano dominates in Novara and takes the lead
Prosecco Doc Imoco Conegliano overpowered Igor Gorgonzola Novara with a clear 3–0 victory (20–25, 17–25, 21–25) in the fifth round of the Italian A1 Women’s Volleyball League. The reigning champions maintained full control throughout the match, moving to the top of the standings with 14 points. Novara, still without opposite hitter Tolok, suffered their first defeat of the season and remain at 11 points.
Conegliano’s superiority was evident in all fundamentals — six blocks, seven aces, and over 50% attack efficiency. Isabelle Haak led all scorers with 20 points (53% attack rate), Lubian added three aces and two blocks, while Gabi anchored the defense with solid reception. Novara’s top scorer Herbots finished with 11 points, but the hosts struggled in serve reception and attack consistency.
Perugia prevails in a five-set thriller against Cuneo
At the Ubi Banca Arena, Bartoccini-Mc Restauri Perugia edged out Honda Cuneo Granda Volley 3–2 (25–27, 25–23, 25–16, 15–25, 8–15) after a dramatic battle. The visitors grabbed two valuable points, led by MVP Gardini with 19 points.
Cuneo looked in control after leading 2–1, thanks to an inspired performance from Pucelj (22 points), but Perugia reacted strongly. With decisive blocks from Bartolini (4) and Mazzaro (3), the Umbrian side took charge in the fourth set and dominated the tie-break to seal a crucial away victory.
Chieri overwhelms Bergamo at home
Reale Mutua Fenera Chieri displayed complete dominance over Volley Bergamo, winning 3–0 (25–18, 25–19, 25–14) at the PalaFenera. The home team, powered by Nemeth (20 points) and Gray (6 blocks), was superior in every department — attack, block, and defense.
Bergamo suffered their third consecutive away loss, struggling especially in reception (just 7% efficiency in the opening set). Chieri, now level on points with Novara and Scandicci, continues to impress as one of the league’s most consistent squads.
Milano signs Akimova to boost attacking options
Meanwhile, Allianz Vero Volley Milano officially announced the signing of Russian opposite Vita Akimova, returning to the court after a long injury. Formerly with Novara, Akimova’s arrival strengthens Milano’s offensive depth ahead of upcoming league and Champions League fixtures.
Next matches
The fifth round concludes tomorrow with four remaining fixtures. Conegliano will aim to extend their lead, while Novara and Scandicci seek to close the gap in the standings.

Dutch volleyball player convicted of child abuse denied entry to Australia
The Australian government has denied a visa to Dutch volleyball player Steven van de Velde, who was convicted of child abuse, blocking his entry into the country.
The Australian government has denied entry to Dutch volleyball player Steven van de Velde, who was previously convicted of child abuse. Van de Velde’s visa application to participate in the upcoming Beach Volleyball World Championships in Adelaide was rejected, the government confirmed through the Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke.
Government cites public safety concerns
According to a report by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC), Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke stated that the government’s primary duty is to ensure public safety. “We will do everything in our power to make Australians feel safe,” Burke said. The decision was directly linked to Van de Velde’s prior conviction for child abuse.
Van de Velde says he respects the decision
In a written statement, Van de Velde said he was aware that the Australian government could take such a decision and expressed his respect for it. The Dutch athlete added that while he has continued his professional career, his past offense remains a lasting consequence in his life.
Player served prison sentence in 2016 case
Court records show that Steven van de Velde admitted in 2016 to abusing a child he met through social media. He was sentenced to four years in prison but was released after serving 12 months. Following his release, he returned to professional volleyball in 2018 and represented the Netherlands in international competitions.
Tournament preparations continue in Adelaide
Preparations for the Beach Volleyball World Championships in Adelaide, South Australia, are ongoing. Tournament organizers stated their full support for the government’s decision, emphasizing that player and spectator safety remains a top priority for the event.

Vallefoglia struggled offensively, with Bici limited to 12 points and Omoruyi to 9, as the team’s efficiency dropped sharply in the final set.
League outlook after round 5

At the bottom, San Giovanni and Macerata are still searching for their first victories. The next round will feature key clashes that could reshape the early standings.
